An innocent family is celebrating their smallest child's birthday assuddenly the door swings open and three masked neo-Nazis invade theirhome. They beat on the mother, kill the youngest son and drag thefamily to the cellar, where the family is faced with unspeakableterror. But as the maniacs start to lose hold of the situation, a fightfor life and death ensues.
James Cullen Bressack's film certainly deserves to be labeled a "terrorfilm". The terror starts directly after the credits, no introduction,no waste of time. The three aggressors enter the house and startraping, murdering and torturing the frightened family. Instead ofletting the viewer get into the mood, the film immediately unleashes aviolent chaos which should definitely be a bit too much to handle for amodern day mainstream horror audience.
One of the films many strengths is its structure. Due to its shortnessand directness, there is no time for taking breath, the film putsconstant stress on the viewer, a fact which is emphasized by the shakycamera and the constant screams of drug-induced violent frenzy andterror. I know this statement may seem somehow obsolete nowadays withall the CGI and big budget productions, but HATE CRIME is frigginauthentic and realistic. In some ways it may remind the well-culturedgorehound of the August Underground films, although it would be wrongto directly compare the two works to each other, as HC relies has awell-developed plot and suspense and doesn't merely rely on showing anassortment of atrocities. Although some of the scenes are very nasty,maybe even bordering on obscenity. The psychological aspect is whatreally gets to you though, the whole film has a menacing aura of uneaseto it, even the scenes not depicting graphic imagery are disturbing dueto the overall realism of the movie. These gentlemen surely know theircraft! Hate Crime certainly isn't free of flaws but all in all the filmworks out great. Few films nowadays have the power to traumatize anaudience as this unconventional bad boy does. HC comes highlyrecommended to all fans of transgressive sicko flicks, terror cinemaand those who do not quench their eyes when confronted to the brutaltruths of human society. But be warned: this movie is sick, highlydisturbing and twisted. This is the kind of stuff that gets peopleseriously offended and may cause permanent damage to an unsuspectingviewer. It is also the kind of stuff any gorehound would like in hiscollection. Don't get me wrong though: under all the layers of filthand depravity one can see the moral statement the makers had in mindwhen shooting HC. This is quite an important film in its way, and it'sa shame that nobody has yet had the guts to release it on DVD. Pity, Ibet this flick would sell really well.

Hate Crime is a wonderfully nasty little gem of exploitation goodness,and a breath of fresh air for horror fans who have grown weary of allthe PG-13, CGI ghost/devil spooky kid movies of the past decade. Pitchshifters, boo faces, and jump scares might startle in the moment, butHate Crime's very real world horrors will linger long after the filmends. The brutality starts about 2 minutes in and doesn't really let upfor the entirety of the picture.
Hate Crime is a "found footage" movie, and while some may argue thatthis premise has run it's course, it's the perfect format for a projectlike this. A nice Jewish family has just moved into a new neighborhood,and is recording their youngest son's birthday party when a not so nicetrio of neo-Nazis invades the home to try and scare them into movingback out. An unplanned act of violence quickly escalates the situationinto something that can't be undone, and all hell really starts tobreak loose.
What proceeds is 70 minutes of beatings, burnings, mutilations, rape,and murders... all in your face and up close thanks to the first personvantage point that the "found footage" format provides. It gives thehorrors an intimacy that wouldn't be possible from a traditionalnarrative, and makes the viewer almost complaisant in the affairs. Thevictims are so completely dehumanized that by the end one becomesalmost numb to their plight, until the credits roll and you'repainfully reminded the extent of what's been lost. Powerful stuff.
But it's not just exploitation (and it would be fine if that's all itwas), there's also a message here. Hate Crime exposes the damage thathate has on not only the victims, but the victimizers as well. It showsthe futility of an ideological stance based on emotion rather thanreason, and how the poisons of bigotry and xenophobia are far moreharmful than the perceived threat of the targets. Nobody "wins" in thismovie. There are no happy endings. Hatred destroys everything andeveryone. But it's message isn't preachy, and never gets in the way ofthe action.
The only reason I don't rate this movie a 10 is because of the lack oftotal nudity. I just don't think that people who rape and kill youwould let you leave your bra on. This is a minor quibble and doesn'tdetract from the film effectiveness, but it needs to be pointed out. Atthe end of the day, Hate Crime is exactly what I'm looking for in ahorror movie, and rightly earns it's place among the greats of extremecinema.

It's evident early on that Hate Crime isn't playing around when itcomes to the violence. It's raw, sadistic, and just as the nameimplies, hateful. That's not to say it's full of gratuitous gore, orblood splatter, there's hardly a drop of the red stuff, save for acouple of scenes. The violence in this movie is actually realistic, andthat's what makes it so disturbing. At times it was difficult to watchbecause the entire time I was thinking to myself "this could easily beactually happening right now". Take heed to all the warnings fromreviews folks, I don't know if I've ever seen a meaner flick.
This is a found footage movie, and I know that's going to get groansand eye rolls from a lot of people, but it doesn't really feel like afound footage movie. It's incredibly realistic, it basically happens inreal- time, and is beautifully edited. It feels more like you're there,enduring the hell with this family instead of simply watching. Ofcourse all the editing in the world wouldn't help if the cast weren'tbelievable, and thankfully, Bressack managed to find some incrediblytalented actors and actresses to bring his story to life. I can'timagine it was an easy feat to get into the right mindset to act outsome of the things in this movie, but almost everyone involved turns ina totally believable, flawless performance. Again, it's terrifyingbecause this is exactly what a home invasion of this nature wouldlook/sound like.
Hate Crime isn't a movie to be enjoyed with others, I feel like itwould lose it's effectiveness in larger groups. It certainly isn't a"get drunk with all your buds, and watch a movie" kind of film. Totruly experience this movie, and get the most out of it, I feel likesolo is the best way to watch.
From the very beginning, Hate Crime grabbed me by the neck andrepeatedly punched me in the gut, and then kicked me while I was down.I lost count at the amount of times all I could do was sit there andsay "fuck". James Cullen Bressack and company deliver a movieexperience that actually gets to you, elicits an emotional response,and that's incredibly rare for me. This is guerrilla film-making atit's finest.
This movie will absolutely not be for everyone. In fact I onlypersonally know a handful of people who I think would be able to watchit through to the end. Only those with strong stomachs, and stronglydesensitized to violence need apply. Hate Crime is a rare treat forthose of us who seek out this type of experience with a film.
